What does the HIV Combo test look for?
The HIV Combo test searches for both HIV ( p24 ) antigen and HIV antibody. The p24 antigen is a protein specific to the HIV virus, since this antigen is detected more quickly in the blood, the test result is also revealed at earlier stages.
The p24 antigen begins to appear in the blood approximately 2-3 weeks after the suspected contact (infection of the HIV virus). This process, known as p24 antigenemia, takes several weeks. In a period of 1-3 months, antibodies, which are our body’s defense weapons against the antigen, begin to be produced. The biggest advantage of p24 tests is that they can diagnose HIV at an early stage before antibodies are formed.
HIV Combo test is a quantitative microparticular EIA (enzyme immunoassay) test that detects antibodies against HIV 1 and 2 and p24 antigen.
