Trichomonas – Trichomonas Vaginalis

 

Trichomonas / What is Trichomonas Vaginalis?

This infection, which is transmitted through sexual contact, is caused by a single-celled microorganism, namely protozon. It can be spread during vaginal, oral or anal sex without a condom or latex/polyurethane barrier. Trichomonas is a common cause of vaginal infections. Symptoms can be frothy, foul-smelling vaginal discharge and itchy.

Sometimes there are no symptoms at all. Trichomoniasis can be successfully treated with antibiotics. When a woman is infected with trichomoniasis, both she and her sexual partner must be treated, otherwise it can be re-infected from untreated partners.

Trichomonas vaginalis Symptoms

  • Vaginal edema
  • Itching, irritation
  • Burning
  • Green-yellow foamy discharge
  • Bad odor
  • Painful urination
  • Spot bleeding

Trichomonas vaginalis Test

Trichomonas test is performed if the woman has symptoms of Trichomonas vaginalis infection such as vaginal discharge or pain while urinating, and if the man has frequent urination or urethral discharge.

From vaginal discharge with a cotton swab in a woman; Pap smear is a swab from the urethral discharge in men. Other sample types are urine or prostate fluid.
