4D (4D USG) ULTRASOUND

4D ultrasound is a miracle of technology. With this device, it is possible to monitor the real and simultaneous movements of the baby in the womb. With this device, it is possible to view your baby in real form and transfer these images to CD.

It took 10-15 minutes for the image taken in 3D ultrasound to become visible in 3D. Advances in computer technologies have shortened this period and movements have also become visible, which is called 4D ultrasound. Here, it is the time factor defined as the 4th dimension and indicates that the examination is done simultaneously.

In addition to the two-dimensional examination feature, 4-dimensional ultrasound devices also contain color doppler and 3-dimensional features. Therefore, they are very expensive devices and are only available in certain centers and institutions in our country as well as all over the world.

Basically, 3 or 4 dimensional ultrasound is not a method that will make the use of classical 2 dimensional ultrasound unnecessary. However, it provides an advantage in some situations that are difficult to detect in conventional ultrasound or require experience. It is especially advantageous in examining the external structure of the baby.

For example, 3 or 4 dimensional ultrasound can provide more detailed information and facilitate examination in the detection of cleft palate and lip anomalies, the detection of some detailed anomalies in the arms and legs, and neural tube defects. In contrast, 2D ultrasound is superior to 3D ultrasound in assessing the baby’s internal organs.

Although it may not seem vital, one of the most important advantages of 4-dimensional ultrasound is that expectant mothers and fathers can see the real appearance of their unborn babies and the emotional bonds that are normally expected to be established after birth are formed beforehand. Indeed, we often experience the truth of this as we witness the mother crying with excitement when she sees her baby on the screen. It is also claimed that expectant mothers who see their babies beforehand spend the rest of their pregnancies more comfortably.

Obtaining a 4-dimensional image on ultrasound requires some conditions. First of all, the amniotic fluid should be sufficient in front of the part we want to examine. Therefore, occasionally the desired image may not be obtained at that time due to the baby’s position. However, the desired images can be obtained as the chance of changing the baby’s position increases by prolonging the examination period or re-doing it later, as is rare.

There is a perinatologist perinatology specialist for 4D ultrasound and second level ultrasound in our laboratory.
