Types of Allergy Tests

The main task of our immune system is to protect our body against external factors that can cause disease. However, like every system of our body, if the working order and balance of the immune system is disturbed, various diseases will occur. One of these diseases is allergic diseases. The words allergy, allergen, atopic structure have become words that are frequently heard in our daily lives, and most people or doctors have connected their current complaints to allergic events. The most important criterion in the diagnosis of allergy is detailed information obtained from the person himself or his family. The knowledge of how much he reacts to which substance will guide the tests to be done.

The first step in allergy treatment is to stay away from the detected allergen as much as possible. In addition, antiallergic drugs that your doctor will start, drugs that reduce inflammation, drugs containing cortisone can be used. Allergy vaccines and desensitization treatments must be administered by an allergist doctor.

Tests in which the allergen substance is applied to the skin:

Prick test:

Specially prepared allergen-containing liquid is allowed to leak into the upper layer of the skin by creating small scratches with a sterile syringe tip, lancet or special needles. Evaluated after 15 minutes.

Intradermal allergy test:

Prick is applied in the same way as the test. However, the liquid is applied to the deeper layer of the skin surface. It is evaluated 15-20 minutes after the application.

Pacth (patch) test:

It is mostly applied to reveal the causes of contact dermatitis (contact eczema), which occurs as a result of contact with substances such as cosmetics, especially metals in watches and jewelry. It is evaluated 48-72 hours after the application. The test material should not be removed or exposed to heat until it has been evaluated.

Blood allergy tests:

It is based on the measurement of the antibody called immunoglobulin E produced by the body when people encounter the allergen to which they are sensitive, in a small amount of blood sample. Total IgE is measured to determine whether a person with complaints has a general allergy picture, and specific IgE level is measured to determine which substance it is sensitive to.

Provocation allergy test:

The substance that is thought to be allergic to the person is given directly and it is checked whether there is a reaction. It is a method generally applied in drug allergies. It is given orally or intravenously through the route in which the drug is normally used. It has high diagnostic value, but since the substance is given directly, there is a possibility of allergic reaction. Therefore, it is a risky method.
