How is the Sperm Test Done?

How to Sperm Test?

Sperm is the male reproductive cell. The production of these cells formed in the testicles begins during puberty. It carries the hereditary information (DNA) that it will transfer to the egg during fertilization in its head. It has a head and a movable tail. Sperm are contained in a thick liquid. The name of this liquid is semen. A sperm cell is formed in 72 days. That is, the formation of a currently usable sperm is based on 72 days ago.

Before having a sperm test, sexual abstinence should be done between 3 and 7 days. There should be no sexual ejaculation (sleeping or masturbation) for 3-7 days by any means. If it has happened, the diet should be started again before the sperm test.

Alcohol, drugs or cigarette consumption should not be consumed during sexual abstinence. Since these substances affect the sperm count and movement, the result of the sperm test is wrong.

Under normal conditions, couples with regular sex are expected to have a baby in at least 1 year. The fact that the woman does not become pregnant during this period reveals the idea that there is a problem in one of the couples. Some tests are requested from both men and women. Here is one of the tests requested from men is the sperm test.

The most important factor determining male infertility is the number and quality of sperm cells. The test to determine the number and quality of sperm is called Spermiogram (sperm test). Having sexual intercourse and ejaculation afterwards does not necessarily mean that there is sufficient number and quality of sperm. For this reason, male patients have a spermiogram as the first examination in case their spouses cannot get pregnant.

What should be considered when giving a spermiogram?

  • 2-5 days of sexual abstinence. (period without sexual intercourse) Shorter abstinence period; number, and longer abstinence affects mobility. Ideally, it should be done after 3 days of sexual abstinence.
  • Sperm sample should be taken by masturbation into a clean container provided by the laboratory.
  • It is important not to use substances such as saliva, soap or shampoo for the purpose of lubricating while collecting the sperm sample by masturbation.

If the sperm is to be given outside the laboratory, the sperm sample must be delivered to the laboratory where it will be examined, within 30-60 minutes at the latest.

There is a special sampling room in our Şişli and Kadıköy branches for sperm testing. It is possible to watch DVD while giving samples. You can also bring your own DVD.

During the sperm test, the sperm shape (morphology) characteristics are examined after a special staining, and the fertility capacity of the sperm sample is determined. Since many factors such as smoking, alcohol, heat, drugs and infections affect sperm production, the analysis of abnormal samples should be repeated two or three times with an interval of one month. If a fertility problem is detected in the sperm analysis, further examination of the man is carried out in terms of physical and hormonal aspects.

The sperm production cycle is repeated every 2-3 months. In other words, a sperm produced will be secreted into the semen after 2-3 months. Likewise, harmful factors that the person encounters or useful drugs used for treatment can also affect sperm production at the end of 3 months. This process should be kept in mind when evaluating sperm test results.
